October Monthly Forum

The next New York Young Republican Club, Inc meeting will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2006.

Joel Mowbray, is an award-winning investigative journalist and nationally-syndicated columnist. He is best-known for his exposes of the State Department which led to the end of Visa Express in Saudi Arabia and the firing of the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Mary Ryan. More recently, he uncovered the fact that the Bureau of Prisons was allowing Islamic terrorists in federal prison to communicate with the outside world - and the agency did not have a single full-time Arabic translator to monitor the phone calls and letters of over 100 terrorists.

Roger Madon, founder of the American Association of Employees and Self Employed Persons (www.aaesep.org), and an advisor to the NYYRC, will speak about this fairly new national organization and how the Left is already making moves to co-opt it and turn it to their advantage before the Right realizes what is happening.

John Spencer for U.S. Senate

Spencerbanner.gifJohn Spencer, Conservative and Republican Party candidate for United States Senate against incumbent Hillary Clinton in the November 2006 election, has been traveling New York State talking about conservative values and real change for New York. Tired of the hate America crowd that rejects traditional marriage and Christian-Judeo beliefs, Spencer is delivering a message that says love of God, family and country is not lost by New Yorkers.

A Vietnam War veteran and two-time mayor of Yonkers, the 4th largest city in New York, Spencer has been involved in public policy and public service for much of his lifetime. Growing up in a blue-collar section of Yonkers, Spencer started his career in construction, then real estate management, and on to Mayor. His no-nonsense approach to city government and foreign policy has garnished him a respectful record.

Adopted as a child, John Spencer is a strong advocate for the unborn. He is unafraid to express his pro-life positions and fight for women in crisis pregnancies, by supporting life centers that help thousands of women in New York each year. Clinton, on the other hand, is beholden to the death crowd that supports partial birth abortion (otherwise known as infanticide) and "mercy" killing of the old, disabled and mentally ill.

In stark contrast to Clinton, Spencer supports tax credits, improved economic growth, educational choices and a strong national defense. Clinton has spent her time in office blocking measures to prevent terrorism, ignoring women's health concerns, rejecting tax relief and siding with powerful union leaders, instead of the very people they represent. From the outside looking in, Clinton resembles a mob boss, plotting her next endeavor, while using her pawns meticulously.

The honeymoon will not last forever. It is just a matter of time before New Yorkers recognize Clinton for who she truly is - a carpetbagger from Arkansas who has no idea what the State of New York needs in order to protect us from terrorism, and has a sociological agenda that says abortion is a good thing, government knows better, and parents are incapable of understanding what is best for their child.

Clinton not only threatens our moral fiber, but our national security as well. She has consistently failed to work with other Senators to give our government officials the tools necessary to effectively fight the War on Terror. Clinton routinely condemns the Patriot Act, which has provided much needed clarity for dealing with, arresting and containing terrorist groups, their finances and their proposed destruction of America.

Clinton opposition to the confirmation of acting U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., John Bolton, is further evidence that she is not focused on national security. Even while the recently uncovered oil-for-food scam goes unpunished, genocide in Darfur, Africa continues, and America bashing is the popular tone, Clinton panders to her liberal base. The one thing America needs right now is a strong advocate for accountability at the U.N. which is precisely what Ambassador Bolton is doing. Hello? Earth to Clinton.

At a curious time in America when terrorists are threatening our lives and the culture of death is eroding our moral character, we need a representative like John Spencer, now more than ever.

* ELECTION DAY IS NOVEMBER 7, 2006 * MAKE SURE YOU CAST YOUR VOTE FOR THE BEST CANDIDATE * JOHN SPENCER FOR U.S. SENATE *

Three Men in a Room Obstruction

Elizabeth Benjamin of Capital Confidential informs us of the Moynahan Station project has been pulled off the table again. This happened a month ago when Speaker Sheldon Silver pulled it from the table when the Three Men in a Room met. Now, it appears Governor George Pataki is pulling the project for review.

Development on the WTC site and the Farley Post Office is constantly being obstructed by our New York State "leaders." Do we want to see New York State government continue like this?

We are certain that one man in the Three Men in a Room will be changing come January 1, 2007. That would be Gov. Pataki's seat. But New Yorkers living in the FInancial District, Battery Park City and Chinatown have a chance to change another man in the triad. Speaker Silver is being challenged by Michael Imperiale. Capital Confidential reported on Michael Imeriale on August 24th, and I followed up on the report over at Urban Elephants.

Really reforming Albany requires enough people in the 64th AD to go to the polls on November 7, and flicking the switch on Row A for the Republican candidate.

Should the Primaries be moved to June?

With the Primary Election past, it's time to look into some Campaign Reform for New York's future.

Yesterday, The NY Sun ran a piece on moving the NY Primary back to the third Tuesday in June.

New York State moved its primary to September from June in 1977, and some civic groups and elected leaders want to move it back. An earlier primary would avoid a campaign during the summer months, when many voters are not paying attention to politics, and it would allow for a longer general election race. The Assembly speaker, Sheldon Silver, has co-sponsored a bill that would move the primary to the third Tuesday in June, but it has not gotten out of committee.

Pundits feel moving the Primary to the start of summer would benefit Democrats in that they won't be "beating each other up" so close to the General Election. This pleases Democrats and worries Republicans. The summer will allow candidates to build a warchest while the average voter can focus on summer vacations and getting away from their routine lives. No one really thinks of politics during the summer. But does this necessarily benefit only Democrats?

Members of the New York Young Republican Club believe that moving the Primary to June would actually be beneficial to Republicans. There are a number of reasons this can help the GOP, as it would help any candidate regardless of party.

1. Party conventions are generally held in late April, early May. If Primary Day had been in June this year, The GOP may have considered holding more Primaries throughout the State, which would, in turn, encourage registered Republicans to vote in the Primary. William Weld may very well have decided to remain in the race after he lost the State Party's endorsement and we would have been treated to two statewide Primaries.

2. Many believe that after the GOP endorsed John Spencer and KT McFarland chose to primary her way onto the November ballot, donors for the race against Sen. Hillary Clinton held off their contribution. This seriously hurt the primary winner, John Spencer, who has six weeks to raise money, get ads out and get his message out against a strong incumbent.

3. The press would end up covering candidates and campaigns more from February to June, before the summer months when folks go out to the Jersey Shore, the Hamptons, or trips to Europe. In the case of Manhattan, it is assumed that the Silk-stocking Republicans are Blue Bloods, like Weld and McFarland. These folks aren't going to be around during the June petitioning or paying attention to any summer campaign, if we believe they'll all be out hiking the mountains of India or relaxing along the shores of Florida. Though I'm stereotyping the GOP here, it is not far-reaching to believe the liberal intellegencia of Manhattan aren't doing the same thing.

I am curious to hear what fellow Young Republicans and other readers of this blog feel about moving Primary Day up to June.
